Dr. William H. Bates O.D. (1860-1931)

The primary foundation for this holistic vision program is the Bates Method, which is a self-healing system developed by an ophthalmologist named Dr. William Bates in the early 20th century. Dr. Bates recognized that glasses were only treating the symptoms of vision problems without doing anything to address the underlying root causes of vision problems. This became clear to him when he continued to see his patients returning and needing stronger and stronger prescriptions the more they depended on artificial lenses. So he set out to find a better, more effective solution for actually fixing vision problems to the point where "visual crutches" were no longer needed. Although he was considered a "renegade ophthalmologist" by the orthodox vision community and his 40+ years of research and discoveries were kept out of the mainstream, he devoted his entire life to creating a roadmap from blur to clarity that has helped thousands and thousands of people break their addictions to prescription glasses. Since Nathan is also a certified Yoga instructor, he also includes elements from yoga, meditation, breathwork, emotional healing, nutrition, and more.

How long will it take me to improve my vision naturally?
That differs for each person. Everyone’s eyes and minds are unique, so it really depends on you. Typically people begin to experience the first initial changes and improvements within a few days or weeks of repeating the vision practices. Then it is a matter of continuing the vision routine regularly until the changes and improvements begin to last longer and become more noticeable and permanent. For some that phase takes weeks, for others it may take months or years. Factors to consider include your age, the strength of your glasses, the length you’ve worn glasses, your current occupation, your diet, your activity levels, and your emotional & psychological background.
Are you an eye doctor?
No. I am a certified Bates Method and Yoga teacher. I do not test or prescribe eyes, I simply offer eye education through guided instruction in and application of natural relaxation methods. The primary practice taught in this course, the Bates Method, was developed by the ophthalmologist, Dr. William H. Bates OD, who wrote the book Perfect Sight Without Glasses, published 11 years of Better Eyesight magazine editions, conducted over 40 years of medical research into natural approaches to eye care, and whose contributions to the field of vision science have assisted many thousands of people in preventing, reducing, and reversing many different kinds of vision problems.
How much time do I need to put into this course?
The Vision Practice videos range from 25 minutes to 75 minutes. The Vision Education videos range 90 minutes to 150 minutes. Part of the purpose of the program is to help you learn and maintain good vision habits 24/7, so in between the videos you also need to be establishing a daily vision routine. At the start of your vision practice, it is a good idea to set aside 15 to 45 minutes a day, either all at once or spaced out throughout the day, to devote to either doing vision enhancing practices or resting your eyes. One of my goals in this course is to show you how to make your entire life become your vision practice, so you can learn how to keep your eyes relaxed and focused all day and all night long, whether at school, at work, at home, or out on the town.
Why have I never heard of this before?
Although the Bates Method has been around for over 100 years, the orthodox eye care field has kept it out of the mainstream. Your eye doctor has probably never mentioned this to you before because it may not be in their best interest to remove your need for glasses, with glasses sales as being one of their primary source of income. In addition to the commercial aspect, there exists an ideological issue too. Many orthodox eye care professionals not only ignore Dr. Bates’ proven research, but they often dismiss all natural alternatives to the conventional eye care model. Sometimes change comes slowly.
Will I have to practice this forever?
Not necessarily. The aim of this course is not necessarily to ‘strengthen’ your eyes or eye muscles, but rather ‘relax’ them. Unlike weightlifting where you begin to lose your results if you stop lifting weights, this form of vision training retrains the eye muscles to stay relaxed and function more normally and automatically. Once your eyes relearn how to see, they don’t really want to go back to seeing blurry. It’s like muscle memory. When your eyes learn how to stay relaxed, you start getting short flashes of clarity. Once your brain starts to figure out what works to bring more clarity, that simply becomes the new way you see all the time, 24/7. That being said, I still recommend you keep up some sort of simple maintenance practice every once in a while even after your vision improves. Think about it like brushing your teeth. Do you plan on doing that forever? Then start thinking about taking care of your eyes like you already take care of your teeth.

How did you get into this?
It started for personal reasons. I wore glasses and contacts for over a decade and I was seeking natural ways to see more clearly without having to get laser eye surgery. I learned about the Bates Method from a friend who taught me some of the basics and then I continued practicing on my own for about 2 years. In that time, my prescription for myopia decreased from -3.5 to -2.0 and my astigmatism dropped from -1.5 to -1.0. I became more enthusiastic and decided to hire a certified Bates Method teacher, Dr. Jerriann Taber (www.eyerobics.net), who helped me get all the way back to seeing 20/20 within less than a year. I took Dr. Taber’s teacher training program and became a certified Bates Method teacher in order to share my story and help other people achieve similar results. It is my belief that everyone should have the right to know all the options available to them and to be able to make a conscious choice of what they want. Not enough people know that these natural eye care alternatives exist and I want to change that.
